AUSTIN EDITION - Suicide attempts unusually high

There seems to be an unusually high number of suicide-related incidents in Austin and Mower County this holiday season, Police Chief Paul Philipp said today.

Since Nov. 20, there have been three suicides and nine suicide attempts in the area, Philipp said.

"There's something that seems to be going on," Philipp said. "People seem to be suffering more than in the past."

On Monday, a 24-year-old Austin man died of a self-inflicted gunshot wound in his home, Philipp said. Two other people required help Monday after making suicidal threats, he said.
