AUSTIN EDITION Wuertz gets touched for long balls in loss

DES MOINES, Iowa -- The Omaha Royals hit four home runs off Iowa Cubs starting pitcher Mike Wuertz en route to a 10-7 win Monday night at Sec Taylor Stadium.

Donzell McDonald and Luis Ordaz hit back-to-back home runs off Wuertz to lead off this Class AAA game, and the Royals never trailed. Wuertz (8-4) struck out 10 batters in just four innings of mound work, but also allowed 10 earned runs.

Brett Laxton picked up the win for the Royals and improved to 7-10. Jason Gilfillan recorded his third save for Omaha.

In one of his shortest outings of the season, Wuertz allowed 10 hits and also walked three batters. Wuertz left in the top of the fifth after failing to get an out in his final frame on the hill.

Bobby Hill, Hee Seop Choi and Mike Amrhein had three hits each as the Cubs rallied for some late runs to make the final score a bit more respectable. The Iowa Cubs fell to 58-53 on the year.
