Avon K. Mason — Austin

AUSTIN — The funeral for Avon K. Mason will be at 1:30 p.m. Sunday at Mayer Funeral Home in Austin, with the Rev. Ron Barnett officiating. Interment will be in Oakwood Cemetery, Austin, with American Legion Post 91 providing military rites.

Mr. Mason, 93, of Austin, died Wednesday (Oct. 29, 2008) at St. Mark’s Lutheran Home.

Avon Karyl Mason was born June 15, 1915, in LeRoy. His family later moved to Red Wing, where he lived until joining the Civilian Conservation Corps at age 16. After leaving the CCC he moved to Austin, where he met Gladys Olmstead; they were married Feb. 6, 1938, in Osage, Iowa. The couple enjoyed camping with the Airstream trailer and were members of the Wally Byam Airstream Caravan, traveling throughout the country. They were also members of St. Olaf Lutheran Church in Austin for many years.

Mr. Mason worked for Hormel Foods Corp. for 30 years and was a World War II veteran. In later years he loved listening to music, going for rides, going out to eat, and having his family around him.

Survivors include two sons, Russell of Austin and Kenneth (Phyllis) of Hastings, Minn.; a daughter, Karyl (Bob) Brabbit of Faribault, Minn.; five granddaughters; and four great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his wife on Jan. 14, 2001; a son, Allen; a daughter, Sandra; his parents, Frank and Beatrice (Sampson) Mason; a brother and two sisters.

Friends may call from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. Saturday at Mayer Funeral Home, and an hour before the service Sunday at the funeral home.
