Pitchers shine in sweep
Rochester Mayo got a pair of strong pitching performances and swept a Big Nine Conference doubleheader from Austin on Tuesday night at Hudson Field.
Garrett Benson pitched a complete game in the opening win, with six strikeouts and four walks. The senior right-hander improved to 2-0.
Ben O’Reilly allowed only two hits in the shortened five-inning second game, with six strikeouts and one walk. O’Reilly, a junior right-hander, got his first decision this season.

"Ben looked good on the hill; he was a big, big plus for us," Mayo coach Dan Hoefs said. "Garrett allowed a lot of base runners, with seven hits and four walks, but he got the tough outs when he needed to."
Mayo improved to 6-2 overall and 5-2 in the conference. Austin is 1-6, 0-6 in the Big Nine.
Mayo got all the runs it needed in the first game in the first inning, when Travis Nordhus tripled and scored on a sacrifice fly by Benson. Kelby Halling added a solo home run in the fourth for the Spartans.
Austin out-hit Mayo 7-5 in the first game. Mark Harber and Joel Swatfager had two hits apiece, and Harber pitched a complete game for the loss.
Nordhus was the hitting star in the second game, going 3-for-4 with a double, triple and three RBIs. Corey Black had a two-run single.
Mayo returns to action Thursday with a single game at Owatonna.
