MAYO 6, FARIBAULT 2

Halling shines on hill

Nobody can beat the Spartans. At least not yet.

Mayo came through with a big fourth inning and took advantage of Faribault to do it. Mayo scored three runs in the frame, using an error, two walks and a hit batter by the Falcons to propel it.

Kelby Halling was terrific pitching for Mayo, which is now 9-0 in the Big Nine Conference and 10-0 overall. The junior tossed a four-hitter and struck out 11, while walking none.

"Kelby hadn’t pitched in a week, so I was worried about how his command would be," Mayo coach Dan Hoefs said. "But he did a real good job there. Plus, he had a real good curveball tonight."

Tony Nierman had two hits, including a double, and two RBIs for Mayo. Mitch Lund was 2-for-3 with an RBI, and Andrew Block had a solo home run.

The Spartans play at Albert Lea at 5 p.m. Thursday.
