The maker of one of the world’s great beers has come out with a limited-edition brew to mark the 250th anniversary of its founding, but Arthur Guinness Original Irish Stout is a thin and fizzy way to celebrate.
Unlike its hearty ancestral stout, this new version is a bit like the legendary black stout diluted with Miller Lite — lots of carbonation and just a hint of the rich, yeasty, roasted barley flavor that makes Guinness distinctive.
This new beer, which will be available for about six months beginning April 24, combines stout and ale malt, features a triple hop process and longer fermentation to make it more bubbly. It’s the brewery’s first new stout for U.S. export since Guinness Draught in the 1960s.
I’m not one of those who think Guinness is a sacred brew — that status is reserved for Leinie’s — but this fizzy concoction doesn’t do justice to the Guinness label and St. James’s Gate in Dublin.
