Bongards buys plant from Land O'Lakes

Associated Press

PERHAM, Minn. -- Bongards' Creameries says it has purchased the Land O'Lakes cheese manufacturing plant in Perham and will reopen the plant.

Terms were not disclosed.

"The Perham facility has had a wonderful reputation for its cheese and the whey products manufactured there. We believe this will open many new doors for Bongards' Creameries," general manager Roger Engelmann said in announcing the purchase late Tuesday.

The Bongards-based company is a dairy cooperative of family farmers established in 1908. Last year, Bongards reached $163 million in sales.

Land O'Lakes transferred its cheese-making operation in Perham to its Melrose facility in February 2002 and had been using the Perham plant only for production of whey proteins. The company shut down whey production in Perham early this year, transferring that business to plants in Pine Island; Spencer, Wis.; and Kiel, Wis.
