BOWLING Yes, records are made to be broken

They say records are made to be broken and that was definitely the case recently at Colonial Lanes.

Bowling in the Thursday Masters League, Larson Siding of Rochester broke the city record for scratch team series with a 3,670 set. Team members are John Meitzner (773), Terry Glarner (771), Dave Hasley (767), Tim Mayer (696) and Brian Floen (663). The previous record was established on April 11, 2000 when Lew Means (763), Jim Goller (756), Mike Week (715), Gregg Stricke (709) and Bob Stricke (664) combined to shoot a 3,655 series at Recreation Lanes.

Other worthy accomplishments are for Tim Shanklin for rolling a 300 game at Byron Lanes and Mike Fauver who went the extra mile of surpassing his average by an awesome 130 pins when he shot a 297 game in Stewartville.

Rob Downer came close to shooting a second 800 series of the season, but wound up at 793, which is still good for second on the year-to-date standings.

At Recreation this week, Ione Maidl was splitting boards as she converted the 6-7-9-10 split and then followed that by converting the difficult 8-10 split.

Tip of the week

Are you having a difficult time carrying the corners and yet you feel comfortable with the line you are playing?

Try moving either forwards or backwards two- to three-inches on the approach and see what happens. This slight adjustment should get the ball to hit a little lighter or heavier and may help you with those corners. Remember, though, sometimes even a perfect shot won't carry so don't get too frustrated.
