Ranked: The Spartans are ranked ninth in the state in the initial Associated Press Class AAAAA high school football poll.
About Mayo: The Spartans appear to be just as strong this season, and perhaps more balanced. Their 417 yards total offense was evenly split between the running game and the passing game. Mayo had 216 yards on the ground and 201 passing, as quarterback Matt Penz went 8-of-13 for 182 yards and three touchdowns. John Morgan caught four passes for 101 yards and two touchdowns, including a 73-yard bomb.
Mayo coach James Miller said his team is looking forward to its first home game of the season.
