BOX: TWINS 3, DEVIL RAYS 2

Eric Milton rebounded from a rough start last time out with 7 1-3 strong innings and Denny Hocking drove in two runs to lead Minnesota.

Taking the first of a four-game series, the Twins momentarily ended their woes against the Devil Rays, who had won 12 of 15 against Minnesota since Aug. 8, 2000. The Devil Rays lost their fourth in a row.

Milton (4-2), who lost 9-1 to Tampa Bay last week, gave up six hits, a walk and a pair of runs and struck out three. Eddie Guardado pitched a perfect ninth for his ninth save.

Joe Kennedy (1-2) allowed three runs, seven hits and three walks in 7 1-3 innings.

Jeff Suppan pitched a two-hitter and Kansas City broke a scoreless tie on a wild pitch by Jeff Weaver (1-4) in the eighth inning.

Suppan walked one and struck out three in his third career shutout and 10th complete game. Suppan's previous low-hit game was a three-hitter, accomplished three times. It was his first shutout since beating Detroit 3-0 on Sept. 27, 2000.
