Boy, 2, found alone in parking lot

By Tim Ruzek

A 2-year-old boy was placed in protective custody after he was found Saturday night walking alone in the ShopKo parking lot in northwest Austin.

Someone saw the boy about 9 p.m. and went into ShopKo to tell an employee, who then picked up the child as a truck came close to hitting him, Police Chief Paul Philipp said.

The boy was taken to ShopKo’s customer-service area, Philipp said.

The boy’s 37-year-old mother, of Austin, asked about lottery tickets before getting the child, Philipp said. She told police that she was looking for clothes and didn’t see the child run away.

The boy was given to Mower County Human Services officials.

The matter was forwarded to the Mower County attorney’s office for possible criminal charges.
