BRIEFS Auditions open for shot at 'Idol 2'

If you have the talent, the look and the style to be an "American Idol" this is your chance to shine.

One finalist from the southern Minnesota, northern Iowa area will be sent on an all-expense-paid trip to Los Angeles, in November to audition for "American Idol 2."

Local auditions, sponsored by KXLT-TV and KROC-FM, will be held next week.

Auditions will be from 4 p.m. to 7 p.m. Monday at the Holiday Inn, 2101 Fourth St. S.W. in Mason City, Iowa, and from 4 p.m. to 7 p.m. Tuesday at the Comfort Inn and Conference Center, 1625 Broadway S. in Rochester.

Contestants should be prepared to sing 30 seconds of an a cappella song of their choice.


Participants must be between the ages of 16 and 24 on Oct. 19, 2002; those under the age of 18 must be accompanied to the audition by a parent or legal guardian. Proof of age and a picture ID must be presented at the audition.

Top finalists from Mason City and Rochester will participate in the final audition at 7:30 p.m. Nov. 8 at Aquarius Club in Rochester. The finals are open to the public; doors open at 6 p.m.

Swingsation benefit slated for Nov. 2

LANESBORO -- Swingsation 2002, an annual benefit for the Cornucopia Art Center, will be held from 7 p.m. to 10:30 p.m. Nov. 2 at the Eagle Bluff Environmental Learning Center near Lanesboro.

Swingsation includes dinner, dancing to the music of the Dave O'Mara Jazztet, and silent and live auctions. Auction items include art, furniture, cuisine, gift baskets and special events. Proceeds will support Cornucopia's various arts programs.

Elks to play host to auction, dinner


An auction, dinner and live entertainment will be featured Saturday at the Rochester Elks Lodge, 917 15th Ave. S.E.

The evening begins at 5:30 p.m. with a silent auction, followed by dinner of Cornish hen at 6 p.m. and "The Patsy Cline Show," a tribute to the great country music vocalist, at 8 p.m.

Tribute to Roy Orbison is Saturday

PLAINVIEW -- The Roy Orbison Tribute, featuring singer John Griggs as Roy Orbison, will be presented Saturday night at Tavern on the Green in Plainview.

Griggs, backed by the Tablerocker Band, will perform Orbison's hits, including "Pretty Woman," "Sweet Dream Baby," "Only the Lonely" and "It's Over."

There is a dinner show at 6 p.m. and a beverages-only show at 9 p.m. Tickets are $29.95 for the dinner show, and $15 for the later show.

Sweet Adelines in concert Nov. 2

Zumbro Valley Sweet Adelines will present a concert, "Nothin' Could be Finer than Singin' in the Diner," at 7:30 p.m. Nov. 2.
