BRIEFS - Parenting workshops planned

Parents Are Important In Rochester will offer three workshops designed to help parents learn techniques that encourage appropriate behavior in preschoolers.

"Without Spanking or Spoiling" will focus on author Elizabeth Crary's problem-solving methods described in her book and will be held from 12:45 p.m. to 2:15 p.m. Thursdays, Sept. 12-Oct. 24, at Golden Hill School.

"Making Discipline Work" will be from 6:30 p.m. to 8 p.m. Tuesdays, Sept. 10-Oct. 15, at Northrop Education Center. The class will concentrate on effective, constructive and efficient discipline.

"Power Struggles" will teach parents how to stay in control and will be from 12:45 p.m. to 2:15 p.m. Thursdays, Nov. 21-Dec. 19, at Golden Hill School.

Foster-care information sessions set

Those interested in foster care, concurrent planning or adoption are invited to attend mandatory orientation and training sessions hosted by Olmsted County Human Services.

An ongoing need for foster care and adoptive homes is present in the county. The orientation and training sessions will help give adults the skills to provide children with a safe, caring and nurturing environment.

Beginning Experience to hold group sessions

A six-week support group for divorced, separated and widowed men and women is being offered by Beginning Experience. The sessions are intended to help participants recover from a loss with the support of others.

Weekend retreat registrations due

A weekend retreat for divorced, separated and widowed men and women of all ages will be offered by Beginning Experience from Sept. 27-29 at Assisi Heights in Rochester.

Free demonstration classes

Rochester Family Music will hold free demonstration classes for families with children ages newborn to 7 years old during the week of Sept. 2. Families are invited to bring their children to experience songs, chants, movement activities and instrumental play sessions.
