Burton W. Vrieze — Spring Valley

SPRING VALLEY — The funeral for Burton W. Vrieze will be at 11 a.m. Saturday at Our Saviors Lutheran Church in Spring Valley, with the Revs. Dennis Timmerman and Laura Fladten officiating. Burial will be in Chester Hill Cemetery in Chester, Iowa.

Mr. Vrieze, 95, of Spring Valley, died Tuesday (Dec. 18, 2007) at Saint Marys Hospital in Rochester.

Burton Vrieze was born March 14, 1912, in Fillmore County. On June 3, 1936, he married Anna Lingbeck at the Methodist church in Lime Springs, Iowa. The couple farmed in Lime Springs briefly, then in 1942 bought a farm in Chester, Iowa. Mr. Vrieze worked with horses and breaking teams. They farmed in Chester until retiring in 1972, at which time they moved to Spring Valley. Mr. Vrieze worked for Green Thumb, doing work at the Spring Valley Museum. He loved to garden, giving away the produce he grew, and also raised a string of gourds for 85 years. He and his wife moved to Spring Valley Senior Living in 2004.

Survivors include his wife; a daughter, Joyce (Howard) Ronken of Kenyon; two sons, Roger (Boni) of Bella Vista, Ark., and Allen of Cresco, Iowa; eight grandchildren; and nine great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by a great-granddaughter, nine brothers and two sisters.

Friends may call from 10 a.m. until the time of the service Saturday at Our Saviors Lutheran Church.
