Callahan, Bowlin lead Winona Cotter to third in state softball

The Post-Bulletin, Rochester MN

NORTH MANKATO — Devin Bowlin ended her record-breaking high school softball career in style here Friday.

Bowlin, Winona Cotter’s senior shortstop, belted a two-run home run to center field, then scored the game-winning run in the fifth inning as the Ramblers topped Pine City 3-2 for third place in the Class AA state tournament at Caswell Park.

Bowlin, who started for Cotter since her seventh-grade season, played in six state tournaments and 18 state tournament games in her career, which is a state record.

Cotter managed just three hits, but Ramblers ace pitcher Hannah Callahan only gave up two. She recorded 11 strikeouts to go with just one walk in her final game for Cotter. Callahan will take her talents to Winona State next season.

Pine City pitcher Rhiannon Sauter hit a one-out RBI single in the first inning to stake her team to a lead. Pine City extended its lead to 2-0 in the top of the third by scoring an unearned run because of two Cotter errors.

Bowlin answered in the bottom of the third with her two-run shot to center field, which also plated Chelsea Cierzan. Bowlin scored the game-winning run in the fifth on a single by Laura Erickson.

Cotter, appearing in a state tournament for the eighth consecutive season, finishes its season with a 24-4 record.
