Century edges JM

In the final race of the meet, in front of a boisterous crowd, the Rochester Century 4x100 freestyle relay team edged out Rochester John Marshall by less than three-tenths of a second to give the Panthers a victory over the cross-town Rockets on Tuesday at the JM pool.

"It was very exciting," said Century head coach Dale Magnuson. "For my first meet as a head coach, for our first meet of the season, it was great."

Century sophomore Barret Myers won the 50-yard freestyle and 100-yard breaststroke, while sophomore Jenny Shaughnessy won the 200-yard freestyle and 100-yard backstroke for John Marshall.

Shaughnessy also set a new pool record in the backstroke with time of 1:01.46. It's the second pool record she has set in as many meets.

"She has been outstanding," said JM head coach Paul Bachman.

Mayo loses at Austin

The Rochester Mayo girls swimming and diving team fell behind early and couldn't overcome the deficit in Tuesday's meet in Austin.

The Packers got off to fast start with a win in the 200 medley relay and never looked back in the Big Nine Conference opener. Lindsay Lukes then took first in the 200 freestyle and the Packers built a commanding lead.

Kathryn Lewallen won the diving for the Spartans. Jenny Einck won two events for Mayo.
