Century swept by Mankato East

Post-Bulletin, Rochester MN

MANKATO — Mankato East dropped Rochester Century to 0-4 on the season by sweeping a doubleheader from the Panthers on Thursday.

The host Cougars won the opener 6-2 and then captured the nightcap 10-0 in six innings.

"It was a tough night for us in Mankato," Century coach Tim Strain said. "We did some nice things, but we need to minimize our mental mistakes. We’ll keep working and trying to improve as the season progresses."

Lindsey Mills had a two-out, two-run single in the fourth to give Century a 2-1 lead in the opener. But East rallied with three runs in the bottom of the fourth and two more in the fifth against freshman Hannah Kuisle. Kuisle, making her varsity debut for Century, allowed four earned runs.

"Hannah kept us in the game by throwing strikes and getting ahead of the hitters," Strain said. "She did a nice job for her first varsity start."

Lindsey Mills went 3-for-4 for Century.

Mankato East pitcher Cole Ries tossed a one-hitter in the nightcap. Angelina Cochran had Century’s only hit.

East jumped out early against Jenessa Johnson with three runs in the first.

Eagles held to two hits

Winona Cotter may not be quite as formidable as in years past, but it’s close. The Ramblers were good enough to dispose of Rochester Lourdes 10-0 in Hiawatha Valley League softball action at Soldiers Field.

Lourdes managed just two hits off Cotter pitchers Brittany Duellman and Whitney Wisecup.

Lourdes coach Doc Johnson is working with a youthful team, again.

"We’ve got to grow into who we are," he said. "Once we do that, I think we’ll be fine."

Lourdes is 0-2, having lost to the HVL’s two biggest powers, Zumbrota-Mazeppa and Cotter.
