Halling, Palmer spark Red Hawks

Kelby Halling pitched a four-hit shutout as the Rochester Red Hawks beat Stewartville 10-0 in six innings in American Legion baseball Thursday.

Halling struck out five and walked four.

"Kelby came out and did what we needed him to do," Red Hawks coach Benji Huegel said. "We have a big weekend coming up. We had two games Friday and two Saturday. He went out, threw a lot of strikes and got a lot of ground balls for us."

Shortstop Shawn Palmer seemed to be in the middle of every rally for the Red Hawks. He hit a two-run homer to get Rochester started in the bottom of the first. He then tripled to open a three-run fifth when the Red Hawks were holding a 4-0 lead. Palmer finished 3-for-4 with a home run, triple and two RBIs and four runs scored.

Palmer’s home run in the first inning "really set the tone for us," Huegel said.

Mitch Anderson was 3-for-3 with a triple and two RBIs for the Red Hawks, while Tyler Rank drove in two runs and scored two runs.

The Red Hawks (5-0 ) play in the Red Haddox Wood Bat Tournament in Bloomington Friday-Sunday. They are guaranteed two games on both Friday and Saturday.
