Boat runs aground; 3 killed
An aging, rusty boat carrying up to 42 people ran aground early Friday east of downtown Miami, killing at least three people and sending three others to area hospitals, while an untold number are still missing.
The U.S. Coast Guard said it planned to search the waters until dusk, and had accounted for 24 people. As many as 18 people still could be lost, and authorities weren’t sure if some of the passengers had made it safely to land.
"We hope they’re alive," said Elee Erice, a spokeswoman for U.S. Customs and Border Protection. "We’re searching for them."
