COL HEARD ON THE STREET SINKING STINK: Getting the stink #x2026;; mud, blood and mold out of sports gear, firefighter equipment, horse blankets and any other tough-to-clean item is the focus of a new business opening in Rochester.

Georgiana Castellanos plans to open Sage Gear Cleaning on Sept. 10 at 3270 19th St. N.W., No.104. It will be staffed by herself, her husband Alfredo and their daughters, Emily and Sofia.

Using an Esporta wash system, the business cleans and sanitizes gear. She says the system can clean eight full sets of hockey gear at once.

Castellanos came up with the idea while watching a softball tourney. Women nearby were complaining about cleaning hockey gear.

She went home and posed the question of how to clean hockey gear to the Internet search engine Google. She discovered the Esporta machine and then contacted the company.

"I went from sitting at a softball game to owning a machine," she says.

Castellanos, who also works as an Olmsted County truancy officer, says her service zone includes Austin, Albert Lea, Owatonna and Winona, as well as Rochester.

AUTO DETOUR: Auto-Techs of Rochester hit the road last week when roadwork forced them to move.

Owner Roger Gansen expects the vehicle repair and sales service business to open this week at its new location of 1650 S. Broadway. He has one person on staff.

The expansion of U.S. 63 forced the move from 3801 Commercial Drive S.W.

ISLAND BUSINESS: Construction has started on a new drive-through coffee and ice cream business -- Paradise Island Gourmet Coffee and More -- in northeast Rochester.

Co-owner Molly Haskins says she expects the eatery at 445 Alliance Place N.E. to open in October. It is in front of Energy Products and Design on 37th Street Northeast.

Haskins, who with her co-owner and sister-in-law Karyn Haskins, has been working on the business for about two years, states that Paradise Island will have two drive-up windows, a walk-up window and a patio -- all done in an island theme with palm trees, thatched roofs and tiki idols.

The menu includes a wide range of coffee offerings as well as ice cream and a full kids' menu. And many combinations of coffee and ice cream will be served.

The idea came from Karyn Haskins, who worked at several drive-through coffee businesses in Seattle, Wash.
