The charter has been developed at numerous international conferences, first in Rio de Janeiro in 1992, then in Johannesburg, South Africa, in 2002 and at other summit meetings.
; Its goal is "to bring forth sustainable global society, founded on respect for nature, universal human rights, economic justice and a culture of peace."
National conferences to build support for the charter are scheduled in St. Paul and 26 other U.S., cities in October of this year.
An editorial on the Earth Charter and the complete text of its provisions will be published in Friday's Post-Bulletin.
