COL Tri County Rural Water hosts annual review

CHARLES CITY, Iowa -- The Tri County Rural Water Project will hold its annual review at 1 p.m. Sept. 10 in Room 110 of the North Iowa Area Community College Center in Charles City.

Project coordinator Dale Adams will provide a project overview. Rep. Mark Kuhn will give a legislative update on funding for the agricultural drainage well project.

The St. Ansgar FFA Chapter will share information on their IOWATER monitoring project at Turtle Creek.

There will also be information on nutrient management programs.

Pork Marketing Conference planned

AMES, Iowa -- A Niche Pork Marketing Conference is planned Sept. 10 from 9 a.m.-3 p.m. in the Scheman Building on the Iowa State University Campus in Ames.

Speakers will focus on research concerning restaurant preferences; consumer research regarding niche products; certification programs and their role in niche marketing; as well as the relationship between producer and retailer.

In addition, the conference will include a mini-trade show of businesses offering services for niche pork marketers.

Stanek is state cookout champion

CALLENDAR, Iowa -- Duane Stanek of Callender is the 2002 Iowa Farm Bureau state cookout champion. Callender won the title Aug. 13 during ceremonies at the Iowa State Fair with a beef recipe called Korean Grilled Beef.

The Iowa Farm Bureau-sponsored contest featured 68 outdoor chefs using their best grilling, roasting and smoking techniques.

Cookout champion Stanek won first place in the beef category before being selected by the judges as the overall winner.

He received $150 and a permanent trophy as cookout champion. Stanek also received $30, a 9-piece condiment set and a 12 pack soft-sided cooler as the beef category winner.

Other first place winners and their categories were: Jeff Helvick of Livermore, elk; Ross Iverson of Marshalltown, lamb; Jeff Harder of Manchester, pork; Stephanie Hertel of Jefferson, poultry; B. J. Hoffman of Liscomb, turkey; and Kurt Jensen of Martensdale, combo/specialty. All winners received $30, a 9-piece condiment set and a 12 pack soft-sided cooler.

Cyclone Beef Day set in Sutherland

SUTHERLAND, Iowa -- Cow-calf producers can learn how to make more money from their calf crop can attend Cyclone Beef Day, set Aug. 29 from 12:30 p.m.-4 p.m. on Deer Run Ranch near Sutherland.

Topics and speakers include John Lawrence, Iowa State University livestock economist, who will compared economic outcomes of four retained ownership alternatives; Beth Doran, ISU Extension beef specialist, and Merv Hoermann, Land O'Lakes beef specialist, who will look at calf needs and feeds; total mixed rations; energy and protein requirements; example rations; bunk management; and more.

The cost is $25 in advance and $35 at the door. The fee include meals, breaks and program materials.

Pork Quality Assurance programs planned

AMES, Iowa -- Pork producers can become certified or renew their certification in the Pork Quality Assurance program during a series of meetings planned across Iowa.

Eighteen meetings are planned through Sept. 12. The meetings will provide opportunities for all producers to learn more about the PQA program, animal handling biosecurity, herd health, food safety and other topics.
