COL Women in the Outdoors event scheduled for Aug. 2

Women 14 and older can learn more about shooting bows and firearms, fishing, cooking and wildlife conservation at an all-day event Aug. 2 at the Zumbro Valley Rifle Club near Zumbrota.

The Women in the Outdoors event is from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. and is sponsored by the Hiawatha and Zumbro Valley chapters of the National Wild Turkey Federation.

The program aims to give women a hands-on outdoors experience.

APPLICATION DEADLINES: Applications for fall turkey hunting permits will be accepted through July 25 at Electronic Licensing System vendors statewide. This year, 3,870 permits will be given out in 23 permit areas.

The deadline for the youth archery deer hunt for Camp Ripley and Arden Hills (in the Twin Cities) is Aug. 1. The Ripley hunt will be Oct. 11-12; the Arden Hills hunts are Oct. 16-17 and Oct. 18-19. The DNR will give out 150 permits for Ripley and 20 for each Arden Hills hunt. It is open to youths 12 through 17.

YOUTH DEER HUNT: Applications for a special youth-only deer hunt in the Whitewater State Game Refuge are now available on the Bluffland Whitetails Association Web site, www.blufflandwhitetails.org.

The hunt is open to youths who will be 12 to 17 years old on Oct. 16. Applications must be postmarked by Sept. 4, and a drawing will be held Sept. 11 at the headquarters of the Minnesota Deer Hunters Association. Fifty youths will participate in the hunt Oct. 16-19.
