Cover, companion crops highlight 2 field tours near Caledonia

CALEDONIA, Minn. — Innovation and experimentation will be featured in a field day hosted by two Caledonia-area farmers on Sept. 3.

Mark Klinski raises organic, food-grade soybeans and will lead a discussion about his experience with seeding beans into roller-crimped rye this year. .

Bob Mierau raises conventional, no-till row crops and organic corn, beans, small grains and cover crops. This year, he interseeded companion crops into organic corn and is looking to graze cover crops to build soil. He also built his own roller-crimper and will have it on display.

The day begins at 10 a.m at the Klinski farm, 9379 Sanden Road, about 6 miles northeast of Caledonia off Minnesota 44. A car caravan will go to the second stop, at 11:15 at the Mierau farm, 13598 Heinz Road, 5 miles east of Caledonia.

There will be a picnic lunch and ice cream after the field tours.
