The Rochester police are investigating a string of jewelry thefts they believe may be related after three older women reported having jewelry taken off their bodies.
On Tuesday, a 76-year-old woman reported that she was sitting outside of her apartment in the 2000 block of 17th Street Southeast about 6:45 p.m. when another woman approached her offering to sell her a ring and a necklace, Rochester Police Capt. Casey Moilanen said. The woman got very close to the 76-year-old woman and then grabbed the gold necklace the woman was wearing and got into a waiting white SUV.
The woman is described as heavy set between 5 feet 5 inches and 5 feet 6 inches tall. Police were unable to locate the woman or the vehicle she fled in.
Police have taken at least two other reports of older women having their jewelry taken off of them. One occurred in southeast Rochester and the other incident occurred in northwest Rochester. Police believe more than one person is involved in these thefts.
