After another person has reported having jewelry ripped off their neck, Rochester police are urging residents to “quickly disengage contact” if approached by someone who wants to show or sell them jewelry.

A 70-year-old woman was walking in the 700 block of 17½ Street Southeast about 10:30 a.m. Thursday when a white van approached her. A man, woman and three children began talking to the woman and asked her if she wanted to see some gold necklaces, according to Rochester Police Capt. Casey Moilanen. While looking at the jewelry, the man took the 70-year-old woman’s necklace from her neck and drove off.

In early July, three other women reported having jewelry taken off them under similar circumstances. All the victims were elderly Asian women, according to Moilanen.

Moilanen said that if someone approaches you and wants to show or sell jewelry, quickly disengage contact with them and contact the police department with a description of the people and vehicle.
