A 40-year-old Rochester woman was arrested Monday for the theft of a vehicle that had taken place earlier in the morning.

Rochester Police Capt. Casey Moilanen said the theft occurred just before 1 a.m. The victim, a 40-year-old Rochester man, had left his 2001 Dodge Ram Pickup running in the 1200 block of Marion Road Southeast when he went to see a friend.

"The next thing he knew, he could hear his truck driving out of the driveway," Moilanen said.

The truck had a trailer attached. Officers saw the vehicle in the area of 16th Street and 11th Avenue Southeast. The driver of the vehicle lost control and stopped in the area of 16th Street and 7th Avenue Southeast. The driver, Maria Smith, fled the vehicle, but officers found and arrested her. She has been charged with theft of a motor vehicle.

A dog that had been in the truck was unharmed.
