Deane C. Hassig — Plainview

PLAINVIEW — The funeral Mass for Deane C. Hassig will be at 11 a.m. Tuesday at St. Joachim’s Catholic Church in Plainview, with the Revs. Donald Connelly and Thomas Hargesheimer officiating. Burial will be in St. Joachim’s Cemetery.

Mr. Hassig, 95, a longtime Plainview area farmer, died Thursday (April 3, 2008) at Saint Marys Hospital in Rochester, following a lengthy illness.

He was born Sept. 17, 1912, in the Woodland area of Plainview Township, Wabasha County. He attended Woodland country school and graduated from Plainview High School. On May 14, 1935, he married Margaret Sullivan in Kellogg. The couple purchased the family farm from Mr. Hassig’s grandfather, who had homesteaded southeast of Plainview. They farmed there their entire married life. The farm was awarded Century Farm status in 1976.

Mr. Hassig was a longtime member of St. Joachim’s Catholic Church, where he served on the advisory board for 10 years. He was a 65-year member of the Knights of Columbus and was Grand Knight from 1949 to 1952. He also served as a Whitewater Township Board supervisor for nine years, was a 4-H leader for 15 years, and was a member of the farm bureau. He had been a resident of Green Prairie Place in Plainview and later moved to St. Isidore Health Center of Greenwood Prairie. His wife preceded him in death on April 18, 2002.

Survivors include four sons, David (Diane), Dwain (Pat) and Arvid (Leita), all of Plainview, and Tom of Savage, Minn.; two daughters, Dorain (Dominick) Costello of Lincoln, Neb., and Janice (Ron) Wolf of Owatonna; 23 grandchildren; and 21 great-grandchildren. In addition to his wife, he was preceded in death by two sons and three sisters.

Friends may call from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m. Monday at Schad & Zabel Funeral Home in Plainview and an hour before the service Tuesday at St. Joachim’s Catholic Church. There will be a Rosary at 5:15 p.m. Monday at the funeral home.
