Decorah FFA Tops Dairy Judging at Tri State Expo

CALMAR, Iowa — More than 500 FFA members from 18 Iowa, Minnesota and Wisconsin high schools participated in the annual Tri State Dairy Expo Sept. 17 at Iowa's Dairy Center. The expo featured dairy judging and dairy products contests, and the Northeast District Dairy Judging and District Soils contests.

Northeast Iowa Community College Dairy Science Club and agriculture students helped with the preparation of cattle, contests and seminars.

The event also featured seminars on dairy and agricultural topics, which included linear scoring, giving reasons in a dairy cattle contest and how to judge a dairy cow. Iowa State University Dairy Science students presented the seminars.

Jessica Schmitt, South Winn, won the dairy judging with reasons contest. Cole Kruse, Maquoketa Valley, place second followed by Tye Anderson, Decorah.

Decorah FFA was the top team followed by Maquoketa Valley.

The dairy judging without reasons top individual was Duane Heim, Western Dubique, followed by Seth Brehm, Oelwein. The top teams were Oelwein with members Olivia Kunkle, Lani Alber, Hailey Schulmeister and Jaida Houge. Another Oelwein team — Holden Bentley, Ername da Silvia, Tyler Bentley and Zach Wegner — finished second.

The winner of the Dairy Products Contest was Nathan Arthur, Sumner-Fredericksbug. Second place went to Alyssa Swela, also of Sumner-Fredericksburg. The top team included Alyssa Swela, Morgan Price, Lyndsey Meyer and Nathan Arthur from Sumner Fredericksburg. The Decorah team that included Katey Forde, Liz Smith and Kirstyn Samuelson finished second.

Liz Smith, Decorah, won the Milk Evaluation contest and Cole Spain, Postville, finished second.

The District FFA Dairy Judging Contest was won by Jessica Schmitt, South Winneshiek and Amanda Engelken, Maquoketa Valley, finished second. The top team was Maquoketa Valley No. 1 followed by team No. 2 from Maquoketa Valley.

Brian Hoffman, Oelwein, won the District FFA Soils Contest and Ben Hoffman, Oelwein, finished second. The top teams were Oelwein and La Porte-Dysart.
