It is considered good form to arrive at the Aroma Pie Shop via bicycle, fresh from the calorie-burning Root River Trail, which runs practically past the front door of this venerable eatery. But don't be afraid to drive up in an automobile, either. "We get a lot of people who drive here," co-owner Geraldine Gustavson said. "They're not all just off the trail.

Gustavson bakes about 25 different kinds of pie each day, from banana cream to good old apple. You might not find raspberry cream pie or blueberry cream pie anywhere else but at her restaurant.

Also on the menu are sandwiches, salads, soups, cakes and ice cream. But this place is known primarily for its wide variety of pies. "They all sell very well, they really do," Gustavson said.

Hours

8 a.m. to 7 p.m. Friday through Sunday through November.

Value

A slice -- so big that it seems more like a quarter of a pie -- of creme pie is $3.75, while a slice of double crust pie is $3.50. Specialty sandwiches are $6.95, or you can build your own deli sandwich for $5.50.

Atmosphere

Geraldine and James Gustavson completely gutted and remodeled the restaurant when they bought it last year. Orders are taken at an old-fashioned saloon-style bar. Booths and tables seat about 60, but many customers choose to eat outdoors.

Specials

Chili will be available during the fall season at $2.25 for a cup or $3.75 for a bowl.

Worth noting

There's never a parking problem in Whalan.

Bottled water, energy drinks on the menu for trail riders.
