ROCHESTER -- The funeral for Donald R. Martin will be 2 p.m. Saturday at Christ United Methodist Church, with the Rev. Nancy Wheeler-Handlon officiating. Burial will be in Oakwood Cemetery.
Mr. Martin, 81, of Rochester, a retired IBM employee, died Tuesday (April 16, 2002) at Saint Marys Hospital following a lengthy illness.
Born Jan. 25, 1921, in Eveleth, Minn., he grew up there, graduated from Eveleth High School in 1940 and attended Eveleth Junior College for two years. From 1942 to 1945 he served in the Army Air Force. In 1948 he moved to Rochester and worked for H &; H Electric until 1949, and then for Gopher Aviation until joining IBM in 1957. On April 11, 1953, he married Edith E. Harvey in Eveleth. She is a retired public health nurse. Mr. Martin was employed at IBM until his retirement in 1986 as an instrument maintenance mechanic. He was a member of Christ United Methodist Church, was involved in church activities and was a meals on wheels volunteer. His interests included airplanes, steam trains and music.
Survivors include his wife; two daughters, Peggy Martin of La Crosse, Wis., and Karen (Dennis) Sabatke of St. Charles; two sons, William R. (Christine) of Lake Forest, Calif., and Gordon J. of Milltown, Wis.; 11 grandchildren; and a great-granddaughter. He was preceded in death by an infant son, an infant sister and a brother.
Friends may call from 4 p.m. to 8 p.m. Friday at Vine Funeral Home Chapel and an hour before the service Saturday at the church.
