Doyle, Holmen qualify for state gymnastics meet

INVER GROVE HEIGHTS — Shannon Doyle and Amanda Holmen of the Austin High gymnastics team qualified for state after strong finishes on Saturday at the Class A, Section One Meet.

Doyle took first-place honors in the Floor Exercises with a 9.6 score. Holmen finished in third-place place on the Balance Beam with a 8.95 score.

The Austin Packers were awarded the Section 1A academic championship. This is awarded to the school with the highest overall G.P.A. calculated by class rank. Pine Island won the section team title and Austin finished fourth on the day.

"We had a good day in posting our season high of 133.475," Austin coach Mark Raymond said. "The team score benefited from a season-high performance on floor of 35.475. Sophomore Magie Bartels turned in a season best 8.2 performance and senior Caren Andresen turned in an 8.575 on the floor to help set up big performances by Amanda (9.1) and Shannon (9.6)."

The day started on the Uneven Bars for the Packers where Andresen led the team with a 8.325. This ended up being good enough for seventh-place on the bars and was only .05 from fourth-place and earning a trip to state. Holmen went 8.3 on the bars.

The second rotation was the beam. Austin freshman Ingrid Baudler got it started with an 8.0 and Holmen finished the rotation with a team high 8.9.

"Amanda had a nice routine and it will be fun to have her compete at the state tournament this year," Raymond said. "It is also nice to know that she probably has a few more tenths left in that routine."

The third rotation was floor, and then the last rotation of the day was vault. The Packers posted a 33.825 score in the final event of the day.

"Although this was not a season high for us in the event, it was a good score and the girls did a great job on the vault," Raymond said. "Holmen turned in the best all-around performance on the day with career high 35.05, good enough for sixth place.

"One negative on the event was that Shannon Doyle rolled her ankle on the last vault of the day. It’s unfortunate that she was injured and we will have to take good care of the ankle over the next few days in order for Shannon to have on opportunity to compete at the state tournament this weekend. At least it happened on the last rotation and she was able to qualify for state before getting hurt."

Austin gymnasts will compete in the Class A State Meet starting on Friday at the Roy Wilkins Auditorium in St. Paul.
