Edward J. Klemm — Rochester

ROCHESTER — Edward J. Klemm, 84, formerly a longtime member of the Rochester Fire Department, died Wednesday (April 9, 2008) at Samaritan Bethany Heights.

Edward James Klemm was born Jan. 8, 1924, in Kenosha, Wis. During World War II, he served in the Navy in Corpus Christi, Texas, as well as in Operation Normandy Landing, Europe, from June 6, 1944, to June 25, 1944. He graduated from cook, butcher and baker schools and served as a ship’s cook first class, with the Atlantic Fleet from 1942 to 1946. On July 18, 1953, he married Elizabeth Ann Clark at St. John the Evangelist Catholic Church in Rochester.

Mr. Klemm spent 27 years with the Rochester Fire Department. On Dec. 28, 1956, he was promoted to fire inspector, and was later promoted to ladderman. He retired in February 1981. He enjoyed woodworking and fishing, and also collected coins. He and his wife lived in Rochester until moving to Byron in 1995.

Survivors include two daughters, Catherine (Gerald "Jerry") Peterson of Rochester and Sharon (Jeffrey) Strain of Byron; two sons, Charles of St. Charles and James (Robyn) of Byron; nine grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; and two brothers, Fred (Shirley) Stuve of New Brighton, Minn., and Robert (Barbara) Stuve of Rochester. He was preceded in death by his wife on April 29, 2001, two sons and a brother.

Visitation will be from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m. Friday at Macken Funeral Home in Rochester.

Funeral services will be private. Interment will be in Calvary Cemetery.
