Events, displays mark Domestic Violence Month

October is National Domestic Violence Awareness Month, and the Women's Shelter in Rochester, along with the Family Violence Coordinating Council, is sponsoring several events and displays.

A commemoration of people affected by domestic violence will be from 3 p.m. to 6 p.m. Oct. 4 at the Rochester Community and Technical College outdoor mall, with a memorial to the 34 Minnesotans who died in 2011 as a result of domestic violence.

Also, four videos will be shown this month:

• Oct. 11 — "Miss Representation," 6 p.m., University of Minnesota Rochester, 111 S. Broadway, No. 300.

• Oct. 16 — "When Injuries Speak," noon, Olmsted Medical Center Hospital in Rochester.

• Oct. 18 — "Telling Amy's Story," noon, city-county Government Center in Rochester, room 2A-8.

• Oct. 25 — "Broken Vows," 6 p.m., People of Hope Church in Rochester, 3703 Country Club Road S.W.

Purple light bulbs will be available for purchase to display during October. The lights will be sold at the RCTC commemoration. They're also available by calling Jackie Benoit-Petrich at 285-1938, extension 105. The Women's Shelter website lists all the events and displays that will take place this month.

People who are dealing with domestic abuse or people who know someone who is may contact law enforcement, a domestic violence program or the Women's Shelter at 285-1010.
