FAITH FOCUS CALVARY EPISCOPAL PLANS RENOVATION

ROCHESTER -- Calvary Episcopal, Rochester's oldest church building, is holding a ceremonial groundbreaking for the church's $1.6 million renovation project at 10 a.m. Sunday.

The landmark church, located at Second Street and Third Avenue Southwest, across from Mayo Clinic's Gonda Building, was founded in 1860.

"We seek to be the spiritual oasis in the heart of Rochester," said the Rev. Nick Mezacapa, rector. "We're enhancing our ministry that is centered on this unique corner of the world."

After the 9 a.m. worship service, a bagpiper will lead the congregation and its choir out of the church and into the courtyard.

The new construction involves the addition of a third-floor meeting space. Plans also are to renovate the nursery, church school and music areas as well as adding handicapped-accessible restrooms, an elevator and a new wheelchair ramp from the courtyard into the church.
