Family Y counseling center to become a private clinic

By Matt Russell

The Rochester Area Family Y will cut its involvement July 1 with YRC Psychological Services, a program that provides counseling services.

The clinic will remain open without interruption, however, and will operate as a private business under a new name: Marsh and Associates Mental Health Clinic.

"I’m keeping the programs, and I’m keeping the staff," said Valerie Marsh, a YRC marriage and family therapist, who will be the owner and director of Marsh and Associates. "What’s changing? Nothing much, just that we won’t be offering sliding-fee."

Marsh and Associates will stay in the same location as YRC Psychological Services, 724 First Ave. S.W., across the street from the Y.

The Y decided to discontinue its involvement with YRC Psychological Services after cuts in government and community funding in recent years made the program financially difficult to sustain, said Dean Stenehjem, the Y’s executive director.

The Y will continue to offer two programs to help at-risk youth: Living Independently Through Knowledge, which assists homeless or near-homeless youths, and Y Mentors, a program that creates relationships between adults and children.
