Austin firefighters will begin inspecting and flushing fire hydrants again Friday.
Austin Fire Chief Dan Wilson said crews will concentrate on the hydrants in the northeast and southeast quadrants this year.
The inspections allow firefighters to make sure hydrants work properly. Wilson said flushing the hydrants helps flush rust and sediments out, benefiting the city's water distribution system.
Much of the work will be done from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Saturday. Wilson warned that, during that time, residents near hydrants might want to avoid washing laundry because of increased rust in the water.
