The cause of a fire that engulfed a car parked along Interstate 90 early Monday morning is not known.
According to Austin police chief Paul Philipp, a 1989 Oldsmobile Regency was reported engulfed in flames at 12:14 a.m. The car was parked near the 177 mile marker along I-90 west.
When officials arrived to extinguish the fire, the vehicle was empty.

A 23-year-old man later returned to the car and told police the car had broken down and he had walked home to get help. He said he didn’t know the car had caught fire.
Philipp said the cause of the fire is unknown. A damage estimate was not available.
