LANESBORO -- Out of the ashes of two Lanesboro businesses, and news that the town's former police chief was charged with setting the fire, there still is some good, said Harold Cropp, a member of the city council.

At a special council meeting Friday, when the council accepted the resignation of former Police Chief John Tuchek, he said he understood why people were feeling betrayed and angry. "That is natural," he said.

But he said people are also saying firefighters from Lanesboro and other towns that helped are heroes for their work in fighting the fire and keeping it from spreading to more buildings. They put in time and effort, often at personal risk, he said.

"They performed way above and beyond the call of duty," he said. "We recognize and salute and honor the work that they did."

While people grieve, they also need to be reminded "of what great human beings make this their town," Cropp said.
