Garretson turns in 821; year's best series

Monica Young tops women bowlers with 717

The scoring seems to be heating up again with the warmer than usual winter.

During the Recreation Community league Lars Garretson had the hot left hand as he threw 17 strikes in a row at the start of the league night. Garretson, who carries a 208 average this year and has averaged as high as 219, started the night out with a 300 game. He followed that up with the first five of the second game for a 244. The third game 11 out of 12 balls were strikes for a 277 game.

The 300 game was a career high for Garretson besting his previous high of 299. The 821 series bested his high series which was a 799.

The 55-year-old bowler has been competing in leagues for the past three years in Rochester after bowling in the Duluth area for a few years. He took about five years off from bowling after moving to Rochester out of frustration with the sport. Duluth is where his previous scoring records were set.

Garretson has been bowling in leagues for 20-plus years and after having a new ball recently drilled has been having some control problems with the new style equipment.

On this night Garretson went back to the old faithful Columbia Yellow Dot for this eventful night.

During the off season Garretson is a golf teaching pro at Zumbro Valley and Hawthorn Hills. During the bowling season you can find Garretson working at Trade Mart furniture selling home furnishings.

"After getting my new Columbia I have spent a little more time practicing to try and get some control on the ball," Garretson said. "The seven pin has been my downfall with all of my equipment but tonight everything went well. After the 244 game the 800 series was the farthest thing from my mind so during the last game things just kind of went the right way."

Maybe some of the old equipment is not so bad after all.

Steve Douskey rolled a 299 game at Colonial Lanes during the IBM Western League. The 299 comes during an unsanctioned league so will not be recognized as a year to date score in this column but it will be a score the 41-year-old Douskey will remember for many years. He carries a 200 average and the game was a career high.

Monica Young, bowling in the Thursday Night League at Colonial Lanes, had the hot hand for women this past week. She rolled a 274 game and a 717 series to take over the high series of the season for women and to move into the third high game.

Youth bowler Brian Vette rolled games of 201-226-279 for a 706 series. He rolled 11 out of 12 strikes during the last game, with only the seven-pin left standing in the eighth frame keeping him from a perfect game. This was one of many outstanding achievements by the youth bowlers over the past week.

Three Stewartville youth bowlers had the hot hand this past weekend.

Brandon Hanson rolled a 265 game which was a 105 pins over his average. Jered Bamlet rolled a 613 series, Adam Hanson a 653 series and Matt Floen a 625 series.
