Gerald G. Schmidt — Preston

PRESTON — The funeral for Gerald G. Schmidt will be at 2 p.m. Saturday at Christ Lutheran Church in Preston, with the Rev. James Rushton officiating. Burial will be in Carimona Cemetery in rural Preston.

Mr. Schmidt, 94, of Preston, died Wednesday (Dec. 26, 2007) at Harmony Community Healthcare in Harmony.

Gerald Gustave Schmidt was born May 22, 1913, at the farm home in Carimona Township, Fillmore County. He attended rural grade school, and high school in Preston, graduating in 1931. On Sept. 17, 1935, he married Carol Hahn. They farmed on the home farm until 1967, when they moved to Rochester. Mr. Schmidt was employed by the John Deere Co., and later worked as a custodian in the Rochester school system until retiring in 1978. The couple returned to Preston in 1979.

He was a member of Christ Lutheran Church and served as chairman of the building committee when the church was built. He was also a member of the Preston Lions Club where he served on many boards and committees.

Survivors include three sons, Richard (Wanda) of Wellington, Colo., David (Jeanette) of Preston and Christopher (Marlene) of Bailey, Colo.; eight grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; and a great-great-grandchild. He was preceded in death by his wife on Oct. 19, 2004.


Friends may call from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m. today at Thauwald Funeral Home in Preston, and one hour prior to the service at the church on Saturday.
