Gertrude B. Halvorsen — Red Wing

RED WING — A Mass of Resurrection for Gertrude B. Halvorsen will be at 11 a.m. Tuesday at the Church of St. Joseph in Red Wing, with Rev. Bruce Peterson officiating. Burial will be in Calvary Cemetery in Red Wing.

Mrs. Halvorsen, 95, of Red Wing, died Saturday (Nov. 22, 2008) at Fairview Seminary Home in Red Wing.

Gertrude Metzler was born June 29, 1913, in Red Wing, and she grew up there. She graduated from Red Wing Central High School in 1931. After graduation, she worked as a bookkeeper for Wilson Hardware. On Sept. 10, 1938, she married Willard Halvorsen at St. Joseph Catholic Church in Red Wing. She enjoyed crocheting, going for rides with her kids, shopping, playing bingo, and listening to music, especially Christmas music.

Survivors include her children, Judy (Jerome) Mann of Goodhue, Daniel of St. Paul, Mary (Don) Brunner of Fridley, Frances (Alan) Schwartz of Elgin, James (Kay) of Red Wing, Robert (Debra) of Peru, Ill., Martha (Bill) Schommer of Hastings, Paula (Charles) Casey of Beldenville Wis., Patty (Kevin) Betterly of Northfield, and Joni (Douglas) Kuhn of Kansas City, Mo.; 30 grandchildren; 25 great-grandchildren; one sister, Helen Lillyblad of Red Wing; and one brother, Joseph (Carmen) Metzler of Red Wing. She was preceded in death by her husband on Aug. 15, 1984, four sisters, and one brother.

Visitation will be from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. Monday at Mahn Family Funeral Home, Bodelson-Mahn Chapel in Red Wing, and an hour prior to the Mass Tuesday at the church.
