Girls hockey: John Marshall/Lourdes 4, Owatonna 2
John Marshall/Lourdes now stands alone at the top of the Big Nine Conference after knocking off previously unbeaten Owatonna 4-2 at the Rec Center. Tuesday night.
JM/L has won six straight and is 5-0 in Big Nine play and 6-1 overall.
The two teams were scoreless through the first half of the game until Laura Meillier open the scoring for the Rockets with an assist from Gabby Hansen. Owatonna's Abby Sawyer evened the score just 45 seconds later.
JML had a 21-9 shot advantage through two periods.
In the third it was all Rockets as they scored three goals and held Owatonna to just four shots. Kate Valentine scored twice and Mallory Adamson finished with a goal for JM/L. Tori Thompson had two assists on the night.
"The girls are playing well. They look confident and are making smart choices with the puck," JM/L coach Bob Montrose said. "It's great to see a team that really buys in to team play and we are improving our game every time we hit the ice.
"I think the team realizes that there is something special happening and they are excited to be a part of it. We are progressing according to our plan and are still a way from where we hope to get to. We keep telling them that we just want to take a step forward whether we win or lose. And so far we have done that and we have a six-game winning streak to boot."
Next up for JM/L is top-rated Wayzata in a road game Monday.
