Girls Hockey | Tears follow Century's 4-3 win over Waseca
Post-Bulletin, Rochester MN
WASECA — It’s a feeling the Rochester Century girls hockey team has waited a long time for.
Eighth-grader Rebecca Lorsung capped a memorable night for her and her team by scoring the winning goal with 4:22 remaining in the third period to lift Century to a 4-3 non-conference victory on Tuesday.
Lorsung not only scored her first varsity goal, she collected two more to record a hat trick and help Century even its record at 1-1-0, a big lift after going winless last season.
Allie Schulte put the Panthers on the board first. Lorsung scored twice on power plays in the second period before netting the game-winner in the third.
Senior Lindsey Mills and junior Dana Olofson each had two assists.
Senior goalie Liz Maidl made 26 saves, including two big ones in the final minute, as Waseca outshot the Panthers 28-12.
"There were some tears … the whole gamut of emotions," Century coach Dan Maidl said of the Panthers’ first victory in nearly two years. "It was a fun, exciting game. All of the girls worked really hard tonight."
Century plays at Dodge County at 7 p.m. on Saturday.
