Rochester Mayo buried Albert Lea statistically, but still had to sneak off with a narrow 3-2 win over Albert Lea on Tuesday in Big Nine Conference girls soccer.
The Spartans outshot the Tigers 11-0 in the first half and 19-4 overall.
"Although the touches were not as good as we could have had, we definitely played outstanding defense," Mayo coach Dave Bahr said. "Particularly players like Liz Mellon in the midfield really played well."
Mary Grace Flesher had two goals, and Jessica Miller scored Mayo’s game-winner. Dani Summerfeldt, Jessica Johnston and Nara Higano all had assists.
Mayo’s game-winner came with 14 minutes left in regulation.
