Gladys Jeanette Meyer -- Rochester

ROCHESTER -- The funeral for Gladys Jeanette Meyer will be at 11 a.m. Monday at Gloria Dei Lutheran Church, with the Rev. Tom Koelln officiating. Burial will be in Oakwood Cemetery.

Mrs. Meyer, 79, of Rochester, a retired registered nurse, died Wednesday (Oct. 27, 2004) at Saint Marys Hospital.

Gladys Jeanette Vine was born Sept. 20, 1925, in Cresco, Iowa, and lived in Decorah, Iowa, until moving to Rochester for nurses training. She attended Decorah public schools and Luther College and entered Kahler Hospitals School of Nursing as a member of the Cadet Corps in February 1944. After receiving her registered nursing degree in 1947, she began a 41-year nursing career as a staff nurse in Colonial Hospital operating rooms. She later held the position of operating room assistant supervisor and for several years was an operating room nurse in endoscopy. In April 1964, she moved to Sacramento and was an operating room nurse at Sacramento County Hospital. After returning to Rochester in September 1966, she was employed at Rochester Methodist Hospital in orthopedic surgery, first as a staff nurse and later as head nurse. She retired in 1988. On Nov. 18, 1948, she married Owen L. Meyer in Decorah, Iowa. Her husband was an optician and machinist. He died Feb. 17, 1994. She was a member of Gloria Dei Lutheran Church, church circle, Methodist-Kahler Alumni, Kahler Married Nurses Unit III and Thunderbolts Motorcycle Club, and was a former member of the Association of Operating Room Nurses and Rochester Archery Club.

She is survived by nieces and nephews. Three brothers and a sister preceded her in death.

Friends may call an hour before the service Monday at the church.
