Goodhue stops E-M in two overtimes

Goodhue made 7-of-12 free throws in the second overtime and staved off Elgin-Millville 57-56 in a Three Rivers Conference boys basketball game Thursday night at Elgin.

Goodhue (9-12, 7-8) senior forward Jordan Ryan made 4-of-4 free throws in the second overtime and scored a game-high 23 points. The Wildcats had a decisive 15-5 scoring edge at the free throw line.

Elgin-Millville (4-21, 1-15) scored the last 11 points of regulation to force the first overtime.

"It's a heartbreaker to lose this one; the kids were just crushed, and so is their coach," said E-M coach Jason Herber.

Joe Appel scored 20 points for the Watchmen. E-M shot just 25 percent in the first half, and Goodhue led 20-13 at halftime.

Byron clinched the Hiawatha Valley League Gold Division title with a 77-35 win over Winona Cotter.

Byron and Lourdes both finished with 14-2 marks in the Gold Division, but Byron advances to the HVL Championship game by virtue of the third tiebreaker, the Rose Bowl rule (the team that advanced most recently yields to the other).

Byron (20-4) plays host to Zumbrota-Mazeppa (20-2) in the HVL title game Saturday at 2 p.m.
