The pool in Silver Lake Park is filled with inviting water after a pipe repair delayed its reopening.

"We are on for tomorrow," Ben Boldt, recreation supervisor for Rochester's Parks and Recreation department, said Tuesday. "The repair to the pipe was completed the end of the last week and we just got the hole filled back in with concrete this morning."

The repaired pipe links the main pool and the kiddie pool, which required a portion of the pool deck to be removed and replaced after it was confirmed that the repair worked.

The repair delayed the planned pool opening by two days, and Boldt said it will provide a welcome addition to the Soldiers Field Pool, which opened Saturday.

"With the free admission at Soldiers Field, it's been an overwhelming response," he said, adding that the high temperatures have also driven large crowds.

To help control crowd sizes, Rochester Orcas swim team, which operates the pools, has established online signup sheets.

The aging Silver Lake wasn't supposed to open at all this year, after being considered permanently closed last year by the COVID-19 pandemic.

Following calls from the public to reopen it for one more year, the city council and Park Board found funds to cover the cost of repairs and maintenance.

It was enough money to open and operate the pool for a single season, but not enough to pay for upgrades or repairs if there would be a serious breakdown of equipment, Parks and Recreation Director Paul Widman said.

On Tuesday, he said the pipe repair doesn't appear to put the pool overbudget.

"In the great reckoning of things, it's minor," he said, adding the need to open the concrete deck -- and repair it -- was likely the most costly aspect of the repair.

Once the Silver Lake pool reopens, open swimming will be available from noon to 5 p.m. every day at no cost.

The Soldiers Field Pool has open swimming from noon to 8 p.m. every day.
