Gunfire shatters proceedings in Minneapolis

Associated Press

MINNEAPOLIS -- A woman involved in a dispute over her father's estate opened fire Monday at the Hennepin County Government Center, killing her cousin, who was the estate conservator, and wounding the conservator's attorney, authorities said.

The shooting took place on the 17th floor of the building in an area of housing court commonly called "harassment court," where disputes are often settled with people representing themselves.

The attorney was in a lobby area when he was shot; the woman was in a nearby bathroom.

The shooting raised questions about security at the building, where metal detectors are not routinely used but sometimes are set up outside individual courtrooms during trials where security is a concern.
