AUSTIN -- A memorial service for Gustaf August Friedrich will be at 11 a.m. Friday at Grace Lutheran Church in Austin.
Mr. Friedrich, 94, of Austin, a retired Hormel Foods Corp. employee, died Friday (Oct. 9, 2004) at St. Mark's Lutheran Home in Austin.
Born Jan. 19, 1910, in Hazleton, Iowa, he lived in North Dakota as a child and moved to Austin in 1928. He served in the Minnesota National Guard. He worked at Hormel from 1940 until his retirement in 1972 and then lived in California until returning to this area following the death of his second wife, Elizabeth. In 1977, he married Naomi Meier, and they lived in Brownsdale until moving to an apartment in Austin in 1994. His first marriage was to Virginia Rideout in 1938. Mr. Friedrich was a skilled carpenter and was in demand as a fix-it man into his 90s. He was a member of Grace Lutheran Church in Austin and a past member of the Eagles, Moose and American Legion. His interests included bowling, fishing, camping and traveling.
Survivors include his wife; three sons, Rodney (Sandra) of Austin, Roger (Carl) of Aurora, Colo., and Dwight (Kathy) of Las Vegas; a daughter, Rachelle (Darrell) Cafourek of Albert Lea; a stepson, Mike (Carolyn) Meier of Brownsdale; a stepdaughter, Pat (Dave) Block of Park City, Utah; 24 grandchildren; 36 great-grandchildren; four great-great-grandchildren; three brothers, John (Jen) and Willie, both of Austin, and Albert (Alice) of Williamsburg, Va.; and two sisters, Caroline Lewis and Edna (Roger) Ludwig, both of Austin. He was preceded in death by a grandson, three stepsons, two brothers and two sisters.
Friends may call from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. Thursday at Clasen-Jordan Mortuary in Austin and an hour before the service Friday at the church.
